Cambridge,

Circa 1814
Charles
Bulfinch Boston's most famous
neo-classical architect, drew plans for a
new Middlesex County Courthouse in 1814.

The original Bulfinch Building, with
its impressive tower, had two wings added
in 1848. In 1889, an adjacent Superior
Court Building was constructed, and by
1924 two additions expanded the
complex to occupy a full city block.
Left vacant by the construction of a new Middlesex County Courthouse
in 1973, these historic structures were left targeted for
demolition until they were nominated to the National Register of Historic
Places.
